Chandigarh, August 13

Sukhmani Singh won five medals, including three gold, at the 43rd Chandigarh State Shooting Championship, which concluded at the Patiala Ki Rao shooting range, Sector 25, here, on Sunday.

The 17-year-old amassed 264 points to win the gold medal in the sports pistol (NR) junior women and senior women categories, respectively.

Sukhmani also dominated the field in the air pistol competition in the youth category, while she won respective silver and a bronze medal in the junior and senior categories of the competition.

The result also enabled the Class XII student of Yadavindra Public School qualify for the upcoming All India GV Mavlankar Shooting Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Chennai.

Interestingly, Sukhmani started practicing for the sports pistol competition at the insistence of Dilip Singh Chandel, the head coach of the Indian team.

She borrowed the sports pistol from her coach Arjun Singh Chandel to get battle ready. “She is a dedicated athlete and will make India proud,” said Arjun.

Last year, Sukhmani had won a gold medal in the All India IPSC in the 10m air pistol competition. She also topped the podium in the Punjab State Inter-School Championship in the U-17 category.

Twin titles for Anirudh

Thirteen-year-old Anirudh Jaggi shot a gold each in the youth and junior categories in the 10m air pistol competition. The budding shooter had earlier won a silver medal in the SGFI championship. He also won a gold medal in the national-level inter-DPS championships.
