Mohali, August 27

The Mohali Deputy Commissioner has directed the officials concerned to complete the fire safety audit of chemical units in the district within 15 days.

“As many as 73 chemical units are being run in the district. There is a need to conduct comprehensive fire safety audit of all these units to ascertain their readiness in the face of eventuality. The officials concerned have been asked to submit the report within 15 days,” said Mohali DC Girish Dayalan.

A meeting in this regard was held at the District Administrative Complex, Sector 76, here today. The meeting was attended by representatives of various industrial associations of the district and senior administrative officials, including Mohali Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Sakshi Sawhney, Mohali SDM Jagdeep Saigal, Kharar SDM Vinod Bansal, Dera Bassi SDM Pooja Grewal and Assistant Commissioner (G) Yashpal Sharma.

Dayalan said the staff had been asked to prepare a checklist in this regard and disseminate its copies to the industries owners. “Mock drills will be held to make factory workers aware of the measures to prevent loss of life and property,” said Dayalan. “The fire safety audit will help tackle unsavoury incidents,” said Dayalan.

The industrial units would be provided technical knowhow to prevent such incidents in future, Dayalan said, while adding that all industrialists would be required to furnish a self declaration that they had ensured all required arrangements.

“The aim was to ensure foolproof fire arrangements to guard against any loss of life and not to harass the industrial unit owners,” the DC added.
