Mohali, April 25

Members of the SSA/RMSA Teachers’ Union, Punjab, on Wednesday staged a protest outside the PSEB building in Phase VIII, demanding unpaid salaries for the past five months.

Union Secretary Harjeet Singh said over 14,000 teachers had come under intense economic stress due to the unpaid salaries and it had become difficult to manage household expenses.

Harjeet Singh, a member, said, “Despite repeated assurances, no employee has received salary for the five months. Contractual teachers are already under duress over the regularisation issue. The least that the department can do is pay salaries.”

Senior members of the union met the Education Secretary, Krishan Kumar, and following the meeting, the authorities gave an assurance that in three days’ time, the salaries of the past four months would be released, but the amount would be disbursed in instalments.

Irate at the apathy, some teachers gheraoed the office and later moved to a pavement outside, saying that they would continue the protest until the salaries were deposited in their bank accounts. — TNS
