Speeding behind 93.85% road accidents in city last year

Out of the total 342 road accidents reported during 2017 in the city, around 93.85 per cent accidents (321) were due to overspeeding, while only 10 accidents were due to drunken driving.

Statistics prepared by the Road Accident Analysis Cell of the UT police reveals that overspeeding is the key reason behind road accidents in the city. In addition to overspeeding and drunken driving, four accidents each were caused due to red-light jumping and weather conditions. Two accidents were reported following wrong side driving and one accident was reported due to use of mobile phone while driving.

Out of the total 107 accident deaths reported last year, two-wheeler riders comprise the maximum number of deaths with 46 people losing their lives, followed by 32 pedestrians and 13 cyclists. Men comprise 83 per cent of accident deaths reported in 2017 with 85 men losing their lives out of the total 107 road accident victims.

The road accident analysis cell has also identified 15 accident-prone spots where fatal accidents were reported. Sector 8 AB/DC dividing road witnessed five accident deaths which are maximum among other accident-prone spots, followed by the Airport light point where four persons lost their lives. Transport light point, meanwhile, witnessed three road accident deaths.

Other accident-prone spots include Press light point, Poultry farm chowk, Kalagram light point, Railway light point, Mandela light point, stretch near ISBT-43, stretch near Railway bridge in Mauli Jagran, Sector 25/38 light point, Sector 31/Industrial Area light point, Hallo Majra light point, road outside the PGI and Sector 46/47/48/49 light point.

16,502 accident-related calls

In 2017, the Police Control Room received a total of 16,502 accident-related calls, out of which 9,077 calls were related to minor accidents.
