Patiala, April 7

In what is believed to be a case of sexual harassment, a man allegedly shot at a nursing student of a local college where he worked as a security guard here on Friday night.

Balbir Singh, the accused, entered the hostel where the victim resided and allegedly fired a shot at her. Other girl students overpowered him to prevent him from shooting again. He sustained a wound in the scuffle that followed. The accused, who has been admitted to a local hospital, is believed to have used a co-worker’s weapon.

The victim, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, claimed she had complained to the college authorities about the harassment by the security guard but they did not take any action on it.

The police said they got the information about the shooting incident at around 10 pm and reached the spot.

Harvinder Singh Virk, SP, Investigation, said, “A preliminary probe into the incident revealed that the accused was in love with the girl and shot at her in a fit of rage. When he saw the bullet brushing through the victim’s temple, he tried to fire another shot but alert girl students overpowered him. An incidental shot ruptured his thigh.”

“We will question the college management on the security lapse, as only two guards are deployed at the college,” Virk said.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to register a case in this connection.

The college authorities were unavailable for comments on the issue.
