The traffic cops have tremendously cracked down on traffic violators in the city which can be substantiated with the number of challans already issued this year.

Violation for wrong parking has also gone up in the city, so do the challans. A rise of around 42 per cent challans has been witnessed this year.

Official figures reveal that while 9,106 wrong parking challans were issued till April 30 last year, a total of 2,264 challans have already been issued for the offence.

Cops said police teams stationed in various parts of the city clamp wrongly parked vehicles and some of the vehicles are also towed away.

They have also initiated action against helmetless riding, which is rampant in the city. According to the data, cops have already issued 25,449 challans for the offence in comparison to the last year when 15,848 challans were issued in the first four months.

Rash and negligent driving, which is a major reason behind road accidents in the city, is being dealt strongly by traffic cops. The police have already issued 5,017 challans for the offence in comparison to 410 challans issued in 2018.

Challans for red-light jumping has also gone up in the city from 1,992 challans issued last year to 5,496 challans already issued this year.

Meanwhile, challans for using mobile phone while driving has almost doubled in this time. While 999 challans were issued during last year, a total of 1,995 challans have been issued this year.

Police officials said there is zero tolerance towards traffic violations in the city, which lead to road accidents.

Vehicles of leaders also not spared

In March, the traffic police had challaned a vehicle for speeding in which a local BJP was travelling. Earlier this year, a Mahindra Thar belonging to Punjab MLA’s husband was impounded by the traffic police after it was found parked in a no-parking zone in Sector 34. Besides, the driver was also not possessing documents of the vehicle.
