Acting on the complaint of Umesh Kumar (36), a resident of Zirakpur, the police have booked around 15 persons on assault charge here last night.

Umesh, in his complaint to the police, had alleged that on Sunday evening he went to his friend Sajay Kumar’s place and was standing near a ‘pandal’ where ‘puja’ was going on as part of the ongoing Navratra festival. He stated that a youth named Rehan, who lives in Victoria City, here, reportedly slapped his friend’s son.

When Sanjay went up to Rehan to enquire about the matter, an argument broke out between Sanjay and Rehan. However, it was resolved there and then only following the complainant’s intervention.

The accused, Rehan, along with his 10-15 unidentified accomplices came there and reportedly attacked Sanjay and Umesh with sharp weapons, sticks and fled away. The police said Umesh and Sanjay were rushed to a hospital in Zirakpur, from where they were further referred to the GMCH, Sector 32, in Chandigarh. They are under treatment, said sources.

The police have registered a case against Rehan and his unidentified accomplices under Sections 323, 325, 341, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC.
