The family of a security guard, who died in a road accident, has been awarded Rs 8.50-lakh compensation by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here. The petitioners included deceased Sita Ram’s 62-year-old wife and three children, who were demanding a compensation of Rs 75 lakh.

According to the petition, on March 9, 2017, around 7.15 am, Sita Ram was going from Ivy Hospital, Sector 71, Mohali, to his house in Sector 56, Chandigarh. He was paddling his bicycle at a slow speed on the left side of the road.

While he was riding from PCL Chowk towards Amartax Chowk and was on the road separating the Industrial Area, Phase 8, and Phase 5, Mohali, a car hit his bicycle from the rear side in front of a gurdwara. The victim fell on the road and sustained serious injuries.

Sita Ram was taken to

Ivy Hospital, from where he was referred to the PGI, where he died on March 17, 2017. It was claimed that Parminder Singh was driving the car at a high speed and a criminal case was registered against him.

It was claimed that at the time of the accident, Sita Ram was 62 years old and was earning Rs 12,000 per month as a security guard at Ivy Hospital. The family added that they had spent Rs 1.50 lakh on his funeral and last rites.

The respondents alleged that a false FIR had been registered. However, the tribunal found the respondents guilty and directed them to pay Rs 8.49-lakh compensation. The cost will be borne by the driver and his insurance company.
