Road mishaps leave 3 dead in Mohali

Three persons, including a woman, were killed in two road accidents here today. 

In the first incident, which occurred near Airport Chowk at around 10.30 am, two youngsters, Shubham (22), a resident of Mohali village, and Pawan Kumar (23), a resident of Sector 56, lost their lives after being hit by a speedy Innova, bearing a registration number of Delhi.

The victims were riding a Kinetic scooter at the time of incident. Pawan Kumar died on the spot while Shubham succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital, where he was shifted by a good Samaritan. 

In another incident, a resident of Balongi village, Ranju Devi (28), was killed when the autorickshaw she was travelling in overturned near Dara Studio at Phase VI here this morning. 

According to the police, the autorickshaw was moving at a high speed due to which the driver, Sandeep, lost control over it, resulting in the mishap. Passers-by shifted the duo to the Civil Hospital at Phase VI, where Ranju Devi was declared brought dead. 

The police have registered cases in connection with both accidents. 

Police reached one hour late, claims eyewitness 

An eyewitness to the accident near Airport Chowk claimed that the Mohali police did not reach the spot for at least one hour despite being informed about the mishap. “We made several calls to the Police Control Room to send a team to save the lives of the youths. However, nobody turned up for at least one hour,” the eyewitness said on condition of anonymity.

He claimed that one of the victims died on the spot after some time while the other was taken to a private hospital by the driver of a cab, where he succumbed to his injuries. “Had the police reached on time, the precious lives of the two youths could have been saved,” said the eyewitness. Sub-Inspector Rajiv Kumar, SHO of the Sohana police station, claimed that he reached the spot within five minutes of getting the information.
