Punjabi varsity, PU girls make winning start

CHANDIGARH:Punjabi University, Patiala, drubbed Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, 12-0 in the opening match of the North Zone Inter-University Hockey Championship for Women at Panjab University, here, on Tuesday.

Punjabi University, Patiala, drubbed Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, 12-0 in the opening match of the North Zone Inter-University Hockey Championship for Women at Panjab University, here, on Tuesday. 

Hosts Panjab University trounced Dr Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad, 5-0, while Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, beat Jammu University 9-8 on penalties.

Meerut university girls, though, lost 9-0 to Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar, in their second match of the day. 

Dr Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University blanked Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra, 8-0 to remain unbeaten on the opening day of the championship. 

Chatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur, received a walkover against Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa. 

Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, Sri Guru Granth Sahib  World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Chaudhary Bansi 

Lal University, Bhiwani, also got walkovers against their respective rivals in the opening round of the tournament.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Panjab University vice-chancellor Raj Kumar.
