PU VC seeks grants from Union Minister

Two days before the Senate meeting, Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, PU, met Somparkash Kainth, Union Minister of State (Commerce & Industry), in New Delhi recently.

Kainth is one of the five Senate members, who have been recently nominated by PU Chancellor and Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu. Kainth will be a part of the PU Senate from August 17 to October 31, 2020, as per the notification in the Gazette of India.

Prof Kumar discussed various proposals regarding the sanction of the Developmental Grant for uplifting the existing infrastructure of the PU to meet the developmental needs of the institution. The VC told the Minister that the PU was a sought-after university for North-Eastern students and the university required extra grants are “special facilities” to them. The Minister assured the VC of all help.

During the Senate meeting held on Thursday, Somprakash had courted a controversy over his statement on Article 370, which he related with reformation of the PU governance reforms. He had said: “If the current government can remove Article 370, then the Panjab University’s governance and structure can also be restructured.” His comment drew backlash from Punjab Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, PU Fellow Sandeep Singh Sikri and Prof SK Sharma, a senior PU Fellow.

Newly nominated Senate member
