Chandigarh, January 9

Prof Rajat Sandhir, Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered a talk on connection between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease during a session on ‘Recent Trends of Research in Neurodegenerative diseases’ during the Indian Science Congress concluded at Jalandhar recently.

He said Alzheimer’s is caused when brain cells are unable to respond to insulin, which is essential for basic tasks, including memory and learning.

In the past 20 years, there has been a parallel increase in the number of people with diabetes and the Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease has now been classified as a new type of diabetes (type 3). He said on the basis of his pre-clinical work, correcting insulin dysfunctions in the brain cells is beneficial in reversing memory functions.

Prof Sandhir also chaired the ‘Science Communicators’ Meet’ which was meant to bring together different interest groups in the field of science promotion and communication on a single platform.
