Panchkula, December 15

The Panchkula Municipal Corporation has issued a property tax notice of Rs 4.54 crore to the Shalimar Mall in Sector 5 here. If the mall management fails to clear pending dues by December 19, the Municipal Corporation team will seal the mall on December 20.

The information was revealed by Municipal Corporation’s executive officer OP Sihag during the District Grievance Redressal Committee meeting, which was held yesterday at the District Administration Complex in Sector 1 here by Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain.

Sihag had submitted that as per fresh calculation, the pending property tax is amounting to Rs 4.54 crore. The final notice has already been issued to the mall management.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said this time they had issued the final notice and no further time would be given to the mall management.

Minister Kavita Jain had directed Municipal Corporation officials to submit report in this regard on December 20.

It is worth mentioning here that last year important documents regarding levying of property tax worth crores on Shalimar Mall as per the policy of the state government had gone missing.

Thereafter, a city resident, Ajay Garg, had even submitted a complaint to the MC. Further, the Municipal Corporation had written to the Panchkula police to register an FIR in this regard.

The mall was sealed in 2015 after the owners allegedly failed to pay power bills of over Rs 15 lakh after the final notice.

Decision to levy property tax taken in 2010

The decision to levy property tax in Panchkula was taken in 2010 when the MC had announced that it would calculate property tax on the basis of existing collector rates in the city. However, the decision was later revised and it was announced that the tax would be charged as per the plot size, which significantly brought down the tax value to a large extent.

The Mini-Secretariat in Sector 1 is also among the defaulters. The list of defaulters was recently prepared by the Panchkula Municipal Corporation.
