Mohali, October 21

Thirty days after the double murder of senior journalist KJ Singh and his nonagenarian mother Gurcharan Kaur at their Phase 3B1 residence, the Mohali police today released CCTV camera grabs of five suspects.

Two of the suspects are wearing turbans and all of them seemed to be Punjabi youths in their mid-20s. “These youths could be involved in the crime, we believe,” said Mohali Superintendent of Police (Detective) Harbir Singh Atwal during a media briefing at the Mohali Police Headquarters, Sector 76, here.

The SP said all youths were found carrying out a recce of the victim’s house for almost two hours from 4 pm to around 6 pm on the day of murder. “Besides, a white Scorpio was also seen in CCTV footage procured by the police team from various locations in the area. Two persons, in a Scorpio, shown in the footage might be another team of criminals involved in the crime,” said Atwal, adding that the registration number of the vehicle could not be deciphered.

The SP said CCTV footage showed that the youths were also making videos of KJ’s house. They are seen roaming in the front and back of the house in turns. “Some of them could also be seen making calls on their mobile phones while standing near the house,” said Atwal.

He said the photos of the youths were shown to most residents of the area but nobody could recognise them. “Their suspicious movements near the crime spot just a few hours before the crime convinced us that they might be involved in the crime,” said Atwal, adding that the police were also taking help of the social media to identify these youths.

Senior journalist KJ Singh was brutally murdered while his 92-year-old mother Gurcharan Kaur was strangled on September 22. KJ Singh’s Ford Icon car, which the criminals had taken along at around 12 am after committing the crime (as per CCTV footage), is yet to be traced.
