Chandigarh, July 17

In a first, the PGI will have a queue management system. The Standing Finance Committee of the institute has received approval from the Union Ministry of Health to introduce the system. A meeting in this connection was held at New Delhi today.

Last year, the ministry had asked the PGI administration to look into some components before implementing the system.

Dr Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, said the administration would introduce the system in the OPDs, fee counters and test laboratories. By introducing the system in a time-bound manner, the PGI would set an example for other hospitals in queue management, he added. Once introduced, patients would be provided with a token during registration for various services. The number would appear on a display screen outside the doctor’s room. It would help the patient to know the estimated waiting time. Similarly, the doctors would be provided with digital devices where the details of patients visiting for consultation would be notified.

A PGI official said the institute had been tasked to make and share the model with other hospitals too.

Other projects approved by the ministry include fellowships for MD/MS courses in nearly 10 departments of the institute and a four-year bachelor’s course in optometry in the Department of Ophthalmology, which includes one-year internship.
