A city-based family, which originally hails from the rural heartland of Jind in Haryana, seems to have turned the slogan of "beti bachao, beti padhao" into a reality.
Sunil and Shiromani Bansal, who are themselves just Class X pass, have devoted their lives to provide quality education to their three daughters and their efforts are harvesting rich dividends.
Khushi, who has scored 98 per cent marks in the non-medical stream, stood first among students of government schools in the city.
When asked how many hours she put in for studies, she replied candidly, “Not much. I used to study all the time.” She is a student of Government Modal Senior Secondary, Sector 16, Chandigarh.
Khushi said her marks were a return gift to her father Sunil Bansal, who runs a kiryana store.
Besides excelling in Class XII exams, she has cleared her JEE (Main) and wants to be a computer engineer.
“Our parents have made so many sacrifices for us. We do not want to disappoint them,” said Khushi, who is second among four siblings. She said she drew inspiration from her elder sister Nancy, who had scored 91 per cent marks in commerce a few years ago.
“Honestly, I am a bit disappointed. I wanted to top the tricity,” said Khushi, who was taking two tuition classes for the past eight months.
She had stopped watching television and stayed away from mobile phones to prepare for the examinations. While giving credit of her success to her parents and mentors, Khushi said, “Without them, I could not have managed to do well in the exams.”
She said that her teachers were very supportive of her. “Teaching was one aspect. They motivated me to do well when the chips were down.”
Khushi’s mother Shiromani Bansal was elated over her daughter’s performance. “It is a dream come true. We could not study beyond Class X but always wished that out children receive the best education. Khushi has made us proud,” said Shiromani.
