Panchayati Raj panel visits city

CHANDIGARH: An expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, to chalk out the future road map for the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in union territories visited the city today.

An expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, to chalk out the future road map for the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in union territories visited the city today. The committee, under the chairmanship of Dr SS Meenakshisundaram, Former Secretary to the Government of India, visited Behlana village and interacted with gram panchayat members. He invited their suggestions for the improvement of the Panchayati Raj Institutions.

At a meeting in the UT Guest House with officials of the Administration and members of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (zila parishads, panchayat samitis and gram panchayats), the Adviser to the Administrator, Parimal Rai, apprised all officials of the objective of the expert committee’s formation. After hearing the representatives of the PRIs, the committee members were of the view that the gram panchayat members would be made aware of their powers and duties. The Adviser approved the training programme for gram panchayat members in the first week of July. The committee will visit Daria village tomorrow. TNS
