Panchkula, November 15

Owing to poor sanitation, especially in colonies and villages, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation has planned to start a night sweeping project.

The Haryana Government has given an approval to hire more safai karamcharis for the sanitation wing.

The project is likely to start next month.  Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Jopgal said they had got an approval to hire more safai karamcharis and the process will start soon.

The sweeping will be done manually.

Recently, an affidavit was filed by the Panchkula Municipal Corporation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, stating that it had just 186 bins for the  collection of  garbage in the municipal limits. The Panchkula civic body limits include Kalka and Pinjore too.

In the absence of garbage bins, people have converted open spaces, empty plots and entry points of villages and colonies into small dumping grounds.

Panchkula was ranked 211 in the Swachh Survekshan this year, which was the worst performance in the tricity.

Cleanliness infrastructure

  • Recently, the MC had decided to hire a company to help the civic body spread awareness among people about the segregation of waste at the source.
  • Notably, there are 80 garbage collection points in Panchkula. The waste collected in Panchkula from these points is transported by 28 tractor-trailers to the dumping ground.
  • For the secondary transportation of waste, Panchkula has six dumper placers, three refuse compactors and 15 Mahindra pick-up trucks. There are 607 temporary (contractual) and 74 safai karamcharis (outsourced).

Waste generation per day

Current       168.3 tonnes
2025       213 tonnes
2035            287 tonnes
