Chandigarh, April 17

Over 50 per cent of the government schools in the city are without regular principals. Information received under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by a city resident makes it clear that 60 of the 115 government schools in Chandigarh do not have a principal.

Based on the information received from UT District Education Officer, Ajay Kumar of Chandigarh on Tuesday brought the management of government schools by senior teachers in the absence of principals under judicial scanner.

In a petition filed in public interest, Kumar sought directions from the UT Administration and other respondents for appointing principals in government schools managed by senior teachers for improving the standard of education.

Kumar, through his counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal, claimed that the standard of education in all such schools was pathetic. The students were not in a position to utter a single sentence in English or even write an application. Competing with students of private schools was virtually unthinkable. — TNS
