UT adviser Manoj Kumar Parida on Thursday inaugurated the first exclusive outlet where products made by Burail Jail inmates will be sold. The outlet Srijan opened in Sector 22.

At present, one has to either visit the jail canteen at the Shopping-cum-Visitor Complex of the jail in Sector 51 or order the products online.

The inmates make a variety of products in the jail ranging from furniture to food products.

Earlier, Burail Jail had entered into the burgeoning online food order business. Anyone can place orders through the jail website and the food items prepared by prisoners are delivered on the doorstep by the jail staff. The jail authorities have specified minimum orders for home delivery.

Officials said all products made by the inmates would be sold at the outlet in Sector 22.

Sweet dishes prepared by the inmates at the kitchen inside the jail, including laddoo, balushahi, besan barfi and gulab jamun, besides moong dal namkeen, sandwiches and cakes would also be available in the store.

Among other products, a variety of wooden chairs, baby chairs, cabinets, wooden flag stands, insignia and candles made by the jail inmates would also be showcased at the store and can be purchased from there.

“Having an outlet in the heart of the city will further boost the sale of jail products, which are of a very high quality,” said a jail official.

With the demand for jail products rising, the jail authorities, in 2018, had made a comeback to the CII fair in Sector 17 after 10 years.
