Chandigarh: Official song for Chandigarh Establishment Day was launched on Saturday, kicking off celebrations to mark the 51 years of 'City Beautiful'. The day is being observed in November. The song, which has been sung by Bollywood fame singer Zeeshan, enthralled shoppers at Sector 17 Plaza here as he performed on the number. The song was officially launched by Asha Kumari Jaswal, city Mayor. TNS

Daily wager ends life 

Chandigarh: A 32-year-old daily wager committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Mani Majra on Saturday. Jasbir Singh hung himself in his room on the second floor of his house near Mori gate. He is survived by his wife and two children aged three and five. TNS

Art installation

Chandigarh: An NGO under the ‘Rally for Rivers campaign set up an art installation to be displayed at Elante Mall, here. Member of Parliament from the city Kirron Kher launched the event at the mall on Saturday. The life-size installation has a height of 8 ft, length of 12 ft and width of 6.5 feet. It gives a message to the public to check the wastage of water in their homes. Volunteers urged people not to waste water, which is precious. The volunteers said “The organisation had drawn huge support for the campaign which can potentially change the plight of our rivers.” — TNS

Man killed in road mishap

Dera Bassi: A 69-year-old man died after being hit by a tipper on the Mubarikpur-Sundran stretch on Friday. The deceased, Ram Rattan Saini, a resident of Pandwala near Dera Bassi, was on his way home when his activa was hit by the tipper. The driver fled the spot. A case has been registered against him. — OC 

Encroachers challaned

Chandigarh:  The Municipal Corporation’s Enforcement Wing on Saturday issued 127 challans during an anti-encroachment drive in the city. The enforcement wing staff also impounded eight cars that were being repaired at the MC land. The officials also impounded goods kept on the encroached land. A team led by inspector Sunil Dutt conducted the drive at the Sector 34 furniture market, Sector 20 Azad market and Sector 28 motor market. TNS
