No stopping card cloning cases

CHANDIGARH: The police have registered another case after a card cloning device was found installed at an ATM of Canara Bank in Sector 17. The device was found last week.

The police have registered another case after a card cloning device was found installed at an ATM of Canara Bank in Sector 17. The device was found last week.

On a complaint of Yogesh Kumar, manager, Canara Bank, Sector 17, the case was registered at the Sector 17 police station. Earlier, the police had registered a case at the Sector 36 police station after a cloning device was found at a Canara Bank ATM in Sector 35, while another case was registered at the Mani Majra police station after a cloning device was found at a Canara Bank ATM in Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra.

The police said a similar cloning device was found at the ATM in Sector 17 by the bank after which a police complaint was made.

A skimming device and a camera installed above the keypad were recovered.

The police said it was suspected that the same persons installed the cloning devices in all three ATMs. “We are waiting for the bank to provide us the CCTV footage of the ATM,” said a police official.

The cyber cell of the UT police have already received close to 70 complaints of card cloning.


Canara Bank ATMs being targeted

Precautions

  • Ensure you get transaction receipt or confirmation through SMS
  • Check for hidden cameras. 
  • Physically check the keypad to ensure there is no overlay device
  • Prefer to visit ATMs which are not at an isolated place; rather visit ATMs which are in banks or outside banks 
  • Always hide the keypad with your hand while entering the PIN 
  • Check the ATM to ensure there are no cloning devices installed 
  • Never allow anyone to stand inside the ATM booth while using it.
