Mohali, December 3

Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra today said not even a single ‘divyang’ (differently abled person) in the district would be deprived of facilities being offered by the state and the Central governments.

Addressing a gathering at a district-level function to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Phase 3B1 here, the DC said the village and ward-level survey of the entire district would be completed by January 13. “The survey is being conducted with the objective of identifying all ‘divyangs’ so that governments facilities and benefits could be provided to them,” said Sapra.

The DC said these persons were very important members of the society. “It is our moral duty to pay special attention to them and help them live with dignity and pride,” she added.

The administration would also form a band of minimum 50 ‘divyangs’, who would perform during the Republic Day function in the district, said Sapra, adding that every ‘divyang’ had a unique quality, which made him/her special. “The challenge is to recognise and encourage it while providing proper guidance to the person,” she said.

The DC asked teachers and students to help such persons. “By doing so, we will be able to create a healthy society,” said Sapra.

Earlier, the DC honoured some ‘divyang’ students, who performed at today’s function, with medals.
