Chandigarh, June 14

The private coaching institutes in the UT will not be allowed to hold classes during school hours — 8 am to 3 pm — as Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi has recently issued an order in this regard, under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code or CrPC.

The order states that it has come to the Deputy Commissioner’s notice that most of the private coaching centres in the city remain open from 8 am to 3 pm. These coaching centres are involved in the business of giving tuition to schoolchildren and their timings clashe with the school hours, which acts as a deterrent for children to attend their schools, states the order.

The Deputy Commissioner also said teachers of several government schools and private schools were working hand in glove with such centres. He said the orders would be implemented from July 1 and would be applicable for two months.

Students, who have already taken final examinations or have passed out of schools, will be exempted. Sources said the order has been issued after several city schools failed to produce good results in recently conducted examinations.

A teacher at a local government school said board exam results of Class XII suffered because several students bunked school to attend coaching classes.

Chandigarh has become a hub for such coaching centres. All major centres have started their business in the city and a large numbers of students from the neighbouring states also are staying in the city to attend coachings, said the teacher.
