No check on waterlogging

The monsoon has provided relief from hot summer and humidity, but it has also brought problems for residents of the tricity. Even light shower throws life out of gear in the City Beautiful. The Phase I and Phase II of the Industrial Area are in state of total neglect as there is no solution to waterlogging during heavy rains. Despite several calls on the Municipal Corporation helpline number, no action has been taken to clear wild bushes or clean gullies and manholes. Garbage is being dumped on roadsides in the industrial area. Traffic movement is also badly affected as vehicles break down frequently on flooded roads. The administration has learnt no lessons from the previous years flooding. Chandigarh cannot become Smart City unless the authorities concerned become more responsive and shun lackadaisical attitude. —Deepak Arora

Bird menace hazard to flying

The Mohali administration’s initiative to check unauthorised construction and mushrooming of butcheries around the airfield is appreciable. The existence of garbage dumps and butcheries attracts a large number of birds, which are dangerous for flight operations. A fighter squadron based at the Chandigarh air force station during nineties was shifted to another base due to the bird menace around the airfield.  Awareness about the bird hazards has to be created among the masses.  —Wg Cdr J S Bhalla (retd)

Amend building bylaws

There is disparity in the building bylaws of the SCOs constructed without covering rear courtyard (as L type structure) in Sectors 7 to 30 and box type structure designed with 100% coverage in Phase II of the city. As the rear courtyard cannot be covered, the open area has become dustbin. The administration has not resolved the issue despite several representations by shops owners and traders welfare associations. Shop owners are helpless as they can’t use their own vacant space. They are being harassed even for temporarily covering the area on the charge of building violations. Byelaws must be amended to enable covering of rear courtyards in SCOs. —Sukhpal Singh
