Zirakpur, June 19

A 24-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her rented accommodation here on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Priyanka Madan, a resident of Trishla Society, Zirakpur.

The police said the incident came to light when Suman Madan, mother of the deceased, a resident of Muktsar district, reached here this morning and found her daughter hanging from the ceiling fan of the room.

The police said the complainant, Suman Madan, alleged that her daughter had called her up on June 18 and told her that she was harassed by her flat owner, Kamaldeep Kaur, for one reason or the other. The complainant stated that when she rang up her daughter on her mobile phone on Tuesday, she did not pick up the phone. She again tried Priyanka’s number around 2 am and it was switched off. Sensing something fishy, the family members reached here this morning.

When the family members knocked at the main door of the flat, they did not get any response. Later, they broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan. They immediately informed the police about the incident.

Acting on Suman’s complaint, the police have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against Kamaldeep.

The police said the deceased was working with Infosys for the past three and a half years and was staying at a rented accommodation in Zirakpur. — OC
