Chandigarh, April 29

The Panchkula district court today extended the police custody of head constable Sunil Kumar and dhaba owner Ravi Tiwari in the case pertaining to an assault on advocates at the dhaba on the intervening night of April 20 and April 21 by two days.

The SIT had arrested both the accused Thursday. A day later, they were sent to three-day judicial custody. Another accused Devinder Sharma was sent to judicial custody.

Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken a suo motu notice of the case and sought an action-taken report from DCP Kamal Deep Goyal-led SIT.

The five accused arrested in the case include head constable (HC) Sunil Kumar, dhaba owner Ravi Tiwari, Devinder Sharma, Suraj Kumar, Vijay Kumar and a juvenile.

Advocate Dipankur Sharma along with his two colleagues were brutally assaulted at a dhaba in Sector 10 on the intervening night of April 20 and 21.

In protest, members of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, the Chandigarh District Bar Association and the Panchkula Bar Association had suspended their work for four days, demanding that the police should add murder bid charge in the FIR. Subsequently, cops added Section 307 (attempt to murder) in the FIR. Later, the strike was withdrawn.

Meanwhile HC Sunil, talking to mediapersons outside the court complex, said that he was innocent. He said, “I hope that justice will be provided to me as I have full faith in the judiciary.”
