Patiala, April 9

The local police have booked six members of a family for allegedly killing a 26-year-old woman for dowry.

The accused have been identified as Bhim Singh, Tarsem Singh and Sarwan Singh, all brothers, their father Sher Singh and mother Santosh Rani, and Komal Rani of Arno village in Patran block of the district.

A case was registered against them at the Patran police station on Monday. The police today claimed to have arrested four of the six accused. They will be produced in a court tomorrow.

The police said the victim, Ramrakhi, had got married to Bhim Singh a few years ago.

In his complaint to the police, the victim’s father, Fauji Ram, alleged that the accused had been demanding dowry from him ever since he married off his daughter. He told the police that he had met a number of dowry demands, but they had demanded more.

He alleged that on Sunday, the accused first assaulted Ramrakhi and asked her to bring dowry. When she refused, they tortured her to death by strangling her, the complainant alleged.

The police said the postmortem examination of the body was conducted. Its report was awaited, they added.
