New pollution-control device for furnace units

Taking the matter of deteriorated air quality of Mandi Gobindgarh seriously, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) developed a pollution-control device for induction furnace industries of the Gobindgarh area.

The air quality of the Gobindgarh area falls in the poor quality zone and the major culprit for this is the pollution by furnace industries, besides emissions from other industries and roads.

The PPCB developed the new device for induction industries in collaboration with the Punjab Science and Technology Council. This will help achieve a better air quality in the area. New system replaces the canopy hood on the crucible of the furnace to side hood along with augmented ID fan capacities, so as to collect the air emissions for treatment. The PPCB has got installed upgraded systems as a model in two industries namely M/s RP Multimetals and M/s Dasmesh Castings.

Kahan Singh Pannu, Chairman, PPCB, said demonstration of new system to all industrialists of the area at Gobindgarh on Saturday was organised so that the technology could be explained and replicated in all induction furnaces in the Mandi Gobindgarh/ Khanna area.

Mohinder Gupta, president of the Induction Furnace Association, Mandi Gobindgarh, assured Pannu that all industries would upgrade to new technology at the earliest to achieve better air quality standards in the area.

Krunesh Garg, Chief Engineer, PPCB, said the board would closely monitor the implementation of project in the area. Vinod Vashist, president, All-India Steel Re-rollers Association, appreciated the efforts of the PPCB and conveyed that members of the association should install the new device in all units in Punjab.
