Patiala, December 17

The new parking lots at Government Rajindra Hospital are set to ease traffic chaos on and near the premises.

Following ever-increasing demand for parking space at the hospital, the district administration has installed tiles on all free spaces, converting them into parking lots. The new parking lots, which will be completed by December 31, are being built by the development fund sanctioned for the hospital by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

The district administration will be spending around Rs 1.5 crore on the project. Earlier, patients had to suffer a lot to find parking spaces and often heated arguments took place between patients’ kin and security guards over parking.

Ambulances bringing emergency patients were quite often seen stuck in traffic chaos at the hospital.

Ripujit Randhawa, a city resident, said, “The new parking lots will definitely help the patients. This is a good initiative taken by the district administration to create more space for parking.”

DS Bhullar, general secretary of the Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association, said, “Over 2,000 patients come to the hospital everyday and more than half of them come from far-off places. Therefore, there was an urgent need to have more parking spaces as people used to park their vehicles on the roadside, leading to traffic bottlenecks.”

He added that there was a need for a multi-level parking for the hospital.
