A warm welcome was accorded to nagar kirtan, dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, by Mohali residents, who turned up in thousands to pay obeisance.

The nagar kirtan entered the town from Sohana area around 9.30 am. Following a brief halt at Gurdwara Amb Sahib at Phase 8 here, where a large number of devotees assembled, the procession passed through several parts in the town, including Phase 7, Phase 3/5 light point, Madanpura Chowk and then proceeded to YPS Chowk before entering Chandigarh around 5.30 pm.

The roads on the procession’s route were decorated with flags, buntings, flowers and balloons. The devotees had set up tents and organised ‘langar’ to welcome the procession. Despite deployment of a posse of policemen and traffic diversions, chaos and jams were witnessed on several roads.

One held, 4 rounded up for pickpocketing

Mohali: Pickpockets had a field day today during nagar kirtan, which passed through various parts of the town.

The local police, which received at least 10 reports of pickpocketing mostly from near Gurudwara Amb Sahib at Phase 8, arrested a miscreant and rounded up about four women in this regard.

The suspects have been identified as Vikram, a resident of Moga and the women, who have been rounded up, are said to be hailing from Nagpur. “Their movement was suspicious so we rounded them up. Verification of facts in this connection is on,” said the police.

Sub-Inspector Jagdeep Singh, Station House Officer at the Phase 8 Police Station, said they recovered Rs 7,500 from the possession of Vikram. A case was registered against him under Section 379 of the IPC, the SHO added.
