The local bus terminal here is crying for attention as it lacks basic facilities. A large number of vehicles, including trucks, pass through the bus stand in the absence of a boundary wall.
More than 5,000 passengers visit the bus stand daily. Around 170 buses, including 100 Punjab Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) buses, reach the terminal on a daily basis.
Lack of basis facilities, including potable water, fans and benches, adds to the woes of passengers at the bus stand.
In the extreme heat conditions, people avoid using cemented slabs as these get hot.
Surjit Singh, a commuter, said, “The bus stand witnesses the huge rush of passengers during morning and evening hours. Many employees travel by bus in the morning to reach their offices in Patiala, Malerkotla and Sangrur.”
Even the single-storey building in which offices of the PRTC are situated is also in a dilapidated condition as plaster has peeled off from the walls. As the monsoon season is approaching, it will be tough for the staff to work.
Bharpur Singh and Tarsem Singh, officials of the terminal, said trucks and vehicles entering the terminal often led to mishaps and these posed a risk.
They added that they could not stop other vehicles from entering the bus stand as there were no gates.
They urged the government to shift the terminal to some other place in the town so that better facilities could be provided to the passengers.
The officials said they had requested the authorities to replaces the fans that had developed snags, but to no avail.
