Mohali, March 8

A pall of gloom descended at the house of Class XII student who committed suicide allegedly due to exam stress in Phase VI here yesterday.

Relatives of the victim, Karanbir Singh, said he was an intelligent and meritorious student, who was among the toppers in Class X and scored a 10 CGPA, passing from Shivalik School. “He consistently scored good marks in all subjects,” a kin said, amidst wailing cries.

One of the victim’s cousins said Karanbir was upset after appearing for ‘tough’ physics exam on Wednesday.

“He came home and told his parents that his exam did not go well. On the question paper, he said he had estimated that he would score 53-55 marks and he was upset that his average percentage would go down.”

A bereaved relative said he was happy after the first English examination.

In the evening, the boy went to his maternal grandparents’ house in Phase IV. When the elders went to the market to run some errands, the boy bolted the door from inside and committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan, leaving behind a suicide note.

“In the note, he wrote that he loved all his family members. ‘Tuhadda laddu aj laddu chad gya’, he had written this phrase at the end,” a relative said.

Investigating officer Amarjeet Singh said in the suicide note, the boy, who had turned 17 in December, said he did not blame anyone for taking the extreme step.

The family members said the boy’s parents were inconsolable and were yet to come to terms with the death of their only child, repeatedly looking at his certificates and pictures.

The autopsy was conducted in the morning, following which his body was handed over to the family. The last rites were conducted in the afternoon.

This is the second case of a suicide by a student in Mohali due to exam stress. A Mullanpur girl had allegedly consumed poison ahead of her first Class X board exam on March 4.
