Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal has been conferred the Police Medal for Gallantry this year.
Chahal is the only officer from Punjab to have got the prestigious award. This year, two officers have got the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, while the total number of officers on the list of Police Medal for Gallantry is 177. Chahal’s name has been announced for the award for eliminating notorious gangster Gursewak Singh, alias Shera, of the Shera Khuban gang in an encounter that took place in September 2012 at Bathinda. Chahal was at that time posted as the ASP there and had led the police team in Shera’s encounter. Shera was wanted in several cases of murder and robbery.
The SSP said he was feeling proud. “I am very happy and grateful to the government for having selected me for this prestigious award,” said Chahal. The Punjab Police authorities said the award had come to the state after a span of over two decades.
About the award
The Police Medal for Gallantry may be awarded for conspicuous gallantry of a lesser degree that what is required for the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry. Recipients for this award are considered without regard to the rank or length of service. Recipients are granted an additional monthly stipend that is paid into retirement, and upon the death of the recipient, to the recipient’s widow. Recipients are also granted limited free travel on trains.
