Mohali, October 22

Residents of new sectors, along with local SAD-BJP councillors, sat on a dharna in front of the office of GMADA at Phase 8 here today to protest against discrepancy in water tariff.

The protesters demanded that the water supply in their areas be handed over to the Municipal Corporation. “In our sectors, the water tariff is 5.5 times higher than what GMADA is charging from people in other areas,” rued the protesters.

The higher tariff is applicable only in Sectors 66 to 69, 76 to 80, Aero City and Eco City.

The councillors, including SS Dhanoa, Bobby Kamboj, Parminder Singh Sohana, RP Sharma and Gurmukh Singh Sohal, who also attended the dharna, demanded that GMADA should immediately charge uniform water tariff or handover the water supply work to the MC.

“Mohali must be the only town with two different water tariffs. Why residents of a particular area are forced to pay more than five times the rates applicable to others,” asked a protester.

They protesting residents threatened to intensify their agitation. “If our demand is not met soon, we will hold a big dharna here on November 26,” they said.
