Mohali, June 24

The Mohali Municipal Corporation has begun the work of filling up potholes on certain roads, which residents label as a wastage of funds as it is being done rather late, just when the monsoon is about to lash the region.

Some roads in the town are still in bad shape. Potholes were repaired in Sector 68 yesterday. Such work was carried out in Sector 69 today.

Councillor SS Dhanoa said a road near Gurdwara Dhana Bhagat in Phase VIII was in poor shape and he wanted to get it repaired. The expenditure estimates for the work had been cleared. However, he would now get it done after the monsoon as it was not advisable to do so during that season. The civic body was, however, getting repair work done on certain roads.

It had been highlighted in these columns earlier that the road leading from the PTL chowk to the Diplast chowk had potholes and it became difficult to drive on it, especially at night. A small stretch along the new ISBT also had deep potholes and drivers had to slow down to cross that road. Those travelling on two-wheelers on this stretch at night faced a great risk.

Roads in a part of the Phase VI Industrial Area are also crying for repair. These roads are bumpy and when rainwater collects on these, drivers face more difficulties as they are unable to gauge the depth of the potholes.

Corporation Superintendent Engineer BD Singla, who has been posted back recently, said he was not clear why the repair work had not been started earlier. The work of filling up potholes was begun after the Commissioner’s clearance. The potholes had to be filled up to avoid accidents. Besides, if that was not done, the potholes would get bigger during the rainy season.

Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman said four expenditure estimates for carrying out patchwork on roads were cleared. The work in Sectors 68 and 69 could not be started earlier as the area had been handed over to the corporation by GMADA only 15 days ago. The patchwork on all the roads was to be done. The civic body had a week’s time in hand to complete the work as the monsoon was likely to begin on July 1.
