Government Senior Secondary School at Manauli village here is the first government-run smart school in the district.

Punjab Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu inaugurated the school after converting it into a smart school here on Wednesday.

Sidhu said the state government was converting several government schools into smart schools with an aim to uplift educational standards in the state.

“We are improving the infrastructure of government schools and providing them with all necessary equipment. The aim is to bring government schools on a par with private schools,” the minister said.

“Our teachers are well-qualified and go all out to provide quality education to the students. People should admit their wards in government schools instead of private schools,” Sidhu said.

He said government teachers were more capable than private ones. “Special workshops and seminars are being held to keep teachers up to date. Also, special programmes to enhance the students’ skills are also being organised in schools,” Sidhu said and added that the government was trying to provide every facility in government schools which private schools were offering.

Meanwhile, District Education Officer (senior secondary) Himmat Singh Hundal said the school was selected on the basis of its past five-year record in education, sports and other extra-curricular activities. “The school is equipped with facilities such as eco club, social science club and maths club,” the DEO said.

Earlier during the day, students presented a cultural programme to mark the occasion.
