Chandigarh, December 9

From January, be ready to pay fixed charges for door-to-door waste collection as notified by the UT Administration. The Municipal Corporation (MC) is holding a special House meeting on December 13 to take the final call on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed with the door-to-door waste collectors.

Sources said besides user charges to be collected from the residents, the terms and conditions of the MoU would be finalised at the meeting.

Presently, garbage collectors are charging fee as per their own wishes.

The waste collection issue has been lingering on after the garbage collectors refused to work under the MC last year. Now, they have agreed in principle to work with the MC for collection of waste.

Facing the wrath of the National Green Tribunal, the MC has decided to cover the entire city for waste collection from January.

The Municipal Corporation had made waste segregation mandatory from October 12 this year, but it could not be implemented fully. Though the Municipal Corporation made segregation of waste must, door-to-door garbage collectors were not allowed to charge the user fee notified by the UT Administration. It was made clear that the new rates could only be charged by the collectors once they sign an MoU with the MC.

The Administration has notified following rates — dwelling units up to 50 sq m (Rs 50 per month), 50 to 200 sq m (Rs 100), 200 to 500 sq m (Rs 200), 500 to 1,000 sq m (Rs 250) and over 1,000 sq m (Rs 350).
