Chandigarh, December 11

The Enforcement Wing of the Municipal Corporation inspected parking lots in Sector 17 here today.

Wing officials warned the violators against parking in non-designated areas.

The MC swung into action after Arya Toll Infra Ltd, which manages 25 paid parking lots, raised the issue of parking at non-designated places by motorists, following which parking rates were doubled.

Parking head Sandeep Bhora claimed on the first day of the implementation of revised rates, around 15,000 vehicles were parked outside the parking lots to avoid paying the charges. He also sought the support of the MC and the police to challan such people.

A senior MC official said, “We inspected parking lots in Sector 17 today and warned those who had parked vehicles outside parking premises. We also impounded three to four vehicles. We are going to form a team and will start taking action against the defaulting vehicles from tomorrow.”

Vehicles could be seen parked on berms, roadsides or on the backside of market places. However, there is a little check on them. At some places, the lack of parking space is also the issue.

The parking rates on December 8 were revised from Rs 2 and Rs 5 for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, respectively, for first four hours. After this, same amount is charged on hourly basis. The parking firm claimed that after the revision of rates, parking outside the designated areas had increased.
