Chandigarh, September 23

A day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court slammed the UT Municipal Corporation for lack of cleanliness at the night food street, adjoining Panjab University, workers of the civic body seized plastic chairs and tables kept on the roof of the washrooms here today.

Garbage dumped near the washrooms adjacent to the street was also removed. Civic body officials said the garbage was removed by the food street workers themselves. Besides, women’s toilet, which is often found closed, was opened today.

The attendant had bolted it from the outside today as well, but opened it after MC officials asked him to do so.

“We do not know why the food street workers have kept the chairs and benches on the roof. We did not visit the place due to the HC’s order, but we got a complaint of seepage in toilets. It was found that the problem was due to the items dumped on the roof,” said an MC official.

A supervisor of the night food street, however, said, “We do not throw garbage on road, but throw it in the garbage trunk placed at some distance.”
