Patiala, December 5

Giving residents of about 20 residential colonies a whiff of clean air, Municipal Corporation, Patiala, has finally started work of covering the garbage dump at Sanauri Adda in the city.

The biggest garbage dump site in the city- about 3 to 4 acres of land, the Sanauri Adda dump has been a cause of concern because of the foul smell, dirt, pigs and stray animals, for residents of colonies, including Tej Bagh Colony, Jagdish Colony, Arayin Majra, Sunny Enclave and several others.

The colonies nearby have been suffering from poor conditions as waste is burnt in open from where toxic pollutants from the fire cause respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, birth defects for the people.

The Municipal Corporation (MC) had in its recent Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting cleared the project for running bulldozers at the site to level the garbage dump.

Yoginder Singh Yogi, MC Senior Deputy Mayor, said the officials employ machines to press and level the garbage dump present on the site with the help of bulldozers and hydraulic poclane machines. “We will level the garbage dump and then it will be covered with sand.”

The MC expects to spend over Rs 22 lakh on the project, including  machine work, purchase and putting of sand.

Senior Deputy Mayor Yoginder Singh Yogi said while the MC had approved the GMADA-Patiala cluster solid waste management to be set up in Dera Bassi, the garbage will be sent to the site upon setting up of the plant. “In the meantime, we will keep on covering the dump thrown here,” he added.
