Chandigarh, June 13

Mayor Rajesh Kalia and Safaikaramchari Union president Krishan Kumar Chadha today allegedly came to blows at  the Municipal Corporation office here.

Kalia later filed a complaint with the police, alleging he was threatened and abused.

The Mayor had convened a meeting of the sanitation wing after 625 sweepers were found absent from duty during inspection last week.

“I told officials that absentees may be given ‘red marking’. The union president came to know about it. He, along with some men, barged inside. He abused me and pushed me. He was furious  the meeting was being held without him,” alleged Kalia.

Chadha said the Mayor had not kept his promise to call him to any meeting where the issue related to the safaikaramcharis was taken up. “When I and 40 union members reached the conference hall and confronted him, he threatened me and attacked me.” — TNS
