To curb air pollution menace in Asia’s biggest steel town Mandi Gobindgarh, the government has started a special drive.

Amloh SDM Anand Sagar Sharma said, “Industrialists have been advised to convert their units into a compressed natural gas (CNG) from coal. A CNG gas station has been set up. The Pollution Control Board has designed a device for recovery of metals from hazardous waste. Air pollution control Device (APCD) will be installed in steel melting furnaces.”

He directed the Forest Department’s officials to plant saplings on a war footing. The SDM asked the Transport Department to ensure that pollution checking centers were working effectively and challan over- loaded vehicles.

Sharma called upon the residents and NGOs to work in tandem with the administration to make the town free of air pollution.

He also advised educational institutions to install CNG kits in their buses.
