Mohali, July 6
An Amritsar resident was held with 11 gold biscuits worth Rs 25.57 lakh at the airport here on Friday. Anil Kumar was returning from Bangkok in an Air India flight and the gold was found in his handbag. He tried to get through without getting his handbag scanned, which made customs officials suspicious.
The gold was in the form of three black tape-wrapped materials and weighed 838.42 gm. Just three days ago, a student was held for smuggling and around 7 kg of gold, worth Rs 2.1 crore, was recovered from his possession.
The gold recovered on Friday was the 10th case of gold smuggling detected by the authorities at the airport after its reopening on June 1. — TNS
