Mohali, April 17

A software professional, working with an IT firm in Mohali, was allegedly duped of Rs 8,000 after he received a fraudulent call from a person pretending to be an employee of Axis Bank, where the victim has a savings account.

The victim, Bharathkeerthi, a Sector 71 resident, received a call from a person, claiming to be an Axis Bank representative, asking for his credit card details if he wanted to claim accumulated 4,200 reward points.

After some reluctance, the victim shared the card details, including the Card Verification Value (CVV) number. The caller told him that he would receive a text message with a one-time password (OTP) and asked him to share the OTP, following which over Rs 8,000 was debited from the victim’s account within minutes.

Bharathkeerthi said after he contacted the bank, he was informed that he had fallen victim to a fraud. The victim, a Bengaluru native, has submitted a complaint at the Mataur police station, but a case is yet to be registered. He said: “In my naivety, I assumed that persons calling were bank employees who wanted an update on bank statement. They made repeated phone calls asking for card details.” — TNS
