In a murder most brutal, a 32-year-old woman from UP was axed to death in her sleep by her estranged husband at Daria village in Industrial Area, Phase I, in the wee hours today.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sabiya. The police have arrested her husband, Sajid Hussain, who killed her as he suspected her of having illicit relations with someone, the police said. A case of murder has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

The murder occurred at 5 am when Sajid Hussain attacked Sabiya while she was asleep with an axe on her forehead, neck, stomach and legs inflicting six sharp injuries. Sabiya screamed and writhed in pain but at that hour no one heard her screams and her husband fled from the rented room leaving her in a pool of blood.

It was three hours after the incident at 9 am that a relative noticed Sabiya lying motionless in a pool of blood when he called the police.

The police reached the spot and a forensic team was called to collect samples from the spot.

The body was then shifted to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16.

Later, the police managed to arrest her husband at about 2 pm. The axe, which was used in the crime, has been recovered. Hussain reportedly confessed to his crime. 

The couple hailed from Muradabad and had come to the city as Hussain was taking treatment from the PGI. The couple has two children a boy aged 10 and a daughter who is eight years old. The children are in their native village.

In his confessional statement, Hussain told the police that his wife was having an extramarital affair and thus he killed her. Hussain had also tried to commit suicide after consuming acid two years ago but survived, and he was being treated at the PGI. 

Hussain came to Chandigarh around two months ago for treatment at the PGI was putting up in a rented accommodation in Daria village. He then called his wife too from the village in Muradabad. 

The body was kept in the mortuary of GMSH-16 for the postmortem examination, which will be conducted on Sunday. A case was registered at the Industrial Area police station.
