MACT awards Rs 61-lakh relief to 30-yr-old woman

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 61.32 lakh to a 30-year-old woman who had suffered 90 per cent permanent disability in a road accident.

According to her plea, the mishap took place on June 30, 2018, when the victim, Priya Rani, was heading towards the railway station from Dhakoli village on her scooter (PB65-TC-1821).

While she was proceeding towards the light point after crossing the railway bridge, a Zen car bearing registration number HR26-Y-0045 moving ahead applied brakes and stopped at the red light. Rani also stopped her scooter at the red light. Meanwhile, a truck bearing registration number HR38-Q-0440, driven by Ram Sewak at a high speed, hit her scooter from behind.

Rani fell off the vehicle and suffered injuries on the vital organs of her body. Later, a case was registered against Ram Sewak under Sections 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Mauli Jagran police station.

The woman was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, Chandigarh. She suffered crush injury on her right arm. Her arm from the shoulder had to be amputated. She also suffered injuries on her right leg. Her leg from thigh to below knee was skin grafted with plastic surgery.

The MACT has granted a compensation of Rs 61,32,800 to the victim. Oriental Insurance Company Limited, the driver of the truck and its owner, Flying Green Carrier of Haryana, have been asked to jointly pay the compensation.
