The Economic Offences Wing of the Mohali police today arrested a Ludhiana native for allegedly duping people on the pretext of sending them abroad and minting money from them.

The accused has been identified as Harpreet Singh, a resident of Daheru village, Khanna district.

He was arrested on the complaint of Rupinder Kaur, a doctor by profession. A complaint against the accused was registered at the Kharar City police station under Sections 406, 420 and 120-B of the IPC on April 26, 2017.

In the complaint, it was said that the accused had introduced himself to the father of the complainant as Harpreet Singh Sekhon, an America-based businessman, at a wedding in Himachal Pradesh. The accused claimed to have contacts if someone intended to settle abroad.

The police said the accused took Rs 23 lakh in instalments and passport from Rupinder as per the agreement to facilitate her travel to America, but later duped her and made excuses, following which Rupinder suffered depression.

Investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly duped a number of residents on the pretext of sending them abroad, including Simarjot Kaur from Khanna and Rajwinder Kaur from Chandigarh.

The police said he was produced before a court and remanded to the police custody for 3 days. Investigations were on to nab his accomplices, if any.
