Parts of Mohali were flooded after rain lashed the city this morning, throwing the life out of gear. Water accumulated at parks, parking areas and markets. Parts of Airport Road and other internal roads were also inundated, leading to a lot of inconvenience. Some vehicles stalled in rainwater.

The worst-affected were parts of Phases I, II, III B 2, IV, V, VI , VIII, XI and Sectors 68 to 71. A lot of water was seen near the PSPCL office in Phase I, the Madanpur and YPS roundabouts, the traffic light point outside Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan and in the parking area outside the GMADA office. Water had also collected on the road dividing Phases VII and VIII in the Industrial Area. Water entered a government school in Kumbra village and accumulated in the courtyard of a government school in Sohana.

According to reports, rainwater entered some HL houses in Phase I and the help of the fire brigade was taken to pump it out. The assistance of the fire brigade was also sought by residents of a pocket in Phase V to pump water out.

A lot of rainwater collected near the Community Centre in Phase II. Both entries to the HIG flats complex in that phase also got flooded. Some low-lying areas in Phase IV too were flooded, especially a pocket near Bougainvillea Garden in the area. In Phase XI, many lanes got flooded and residents could not get out of their houses. Water also entered a few vehicles. Jasbir Singh, senior vice-president of a residents’ welfare association, said the life came to a standstill in a pocket of Phase XI. —OC
