Mohali, October 8

A 31-year-old woman lecturer at Khalsa College in Mohali allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her rented accommodation at Phase 3A here today.

The victim has been identified as Preeti, a native of Samana, who was an English lecturer at the college.

According to Sub-Inspector Rajiv Kumar, SHO of the Mataur police station, action has been initiated against the victim’s husband, Kapil Sharma, who is an employee of a medicine company. “The victim’s father, Gokul Chand Bhardwaj, alleged that Kapil used to thrash and harass his daughter due to which Preeti took the extreme step,” said Rajiv Kumar.

He said it was the second marriage of Preeti. “She was a divorcee. She came in contact with Kapil through Facebook and the duo solemnised their marriage on April 29 this year,” said the SHO, adding that in his complaint, Gokul Chand alleged that Kapil had started harassing his daughter around three months after their marriage.

Gokul Chand said his daughter had apprised him of the atrocities committed by her husband, but he always advised them to live peacefully. The father alleged that Preeti had also messaged her maternal aunt yesterday to tell her about some thrashing incident.

“We are taking action against Kapil. A case is being registered in this regard,” said the SHO. —TNS
